Buying nail equipment on AliExpress: a checklist

Seven checks before you buy a nail drill, lamp, collector or bits on AliExpress: plug and voltage, charger, safety marks, bit shank, the real seller and returns.

Short answer

Before you pay for nail equipment on AliExpress, check the exact variant you have selected: a native US plug and an input that covers 120 V, a charger that matches the device, any safety mark against the certifier's directory, a bit shank stated as 3/32 inch, a seller the brand itself links to, and whether the Free Return label applies.[1] We could not confirm an official AliExpress store for any of the nail brands we checked, so treat every store name as a claim.

The checklist

  1. Plug and voltage: the selected variant has a US plug and an input that covers 120 V.
  2. Charger: a rechargeable device ships with its own charger, and its output matches the device.
  3. Safety marks: any UL, ETL or CSA claim can be found in the certifier's directory.
  4. Bit shank: bits and handpieces state 3/32 inch, not only a metric figure.
  5. Seller: you know whether the brand itself links to the store.
  6. Returns: you know whether the listing carries the Free Return label.
  7. Costs at checkout: you have read the shipping, import and fee lines before paying.

Each check is explained below.

1. The plug and voltage are in the variant

Nail lamps and collectors are often sold in regional versions under one listing. SUNUV, for example, offers US, UK and EU plugs, and does not publish its adapters' input ratings.[2] MelodySusie says it ships the power supply for the buyer's region with either a national standard plug or a conversion plug, which may mean a plug adapter instead of a native plug.[3]

Read the variant you select, not the listing title. Choose the one labeled with a US plug and an input of 110-120 V or a range such as 100-240 V. If the variant only says "EU" or "220 V", or the plug is a "conversion plug", ask the seller in writing before you pay. The voltage and plugs guide explains input voltage, dual voltage and adapters.

2. The charger matches the device

Cordless drills, rechargeable lamps and some collectors depend on a charger or power adapter. Health Canada says a replacement charger's output voltage must match the device's input and its current must be compatible, and that incompatible adapters can overheat or damage devices.[4] It also recommends the original charger, and replacement chargers that carry a Canadian mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL.[5]

Check that the listing includes a charger, not only a cable, and that its output is printed on the listing or in the photos.

3. Safety marks you can check

  • UL, ETL, CSA and other NRTL marks come from labs OSHA recognizes to test and certify products; each lab uses its own registered mark.[6] A logo in a photo is easy to copy, so look the product up in the certifier's directory; Intertek offers directories for the ETL mark.[7]
  • FCC testing covers radio-frequency emissions. An FCC mark is not a UL, ETL or CSA safety listing.[8]
  • Canada. Health Canada advises not buying plug-in electrical products without a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, and says the mark must be on the product, not just the packaging.[4]

A missing mark is an unknown, not proof of a problem, but it is a reason to prefer a listing that names one you can verify. The safety marks guide covers each mark.

4. The bit shank says 3/32 inch

Bits and handpieces are sold by shank size, and the common size is 3/32 inch. Many listings give a metric figure instead. 3/32 inch is exactly 2.38125 mm,[9] so a bit labeled 2.35 mm is described as a slightly different size, and we found no maker statement that the two labels are interchangeable. Makers state fit in 3/32 inch: KUPA says its diamond small barrel can be used with any 3/32-inch e-file handpiece.[10]

Buy bits in the size your handpiece maker states, and prefer listings that state 3/32 inch. The 3/32 vs 2.35 mm guide explains the numbers.

5. Who is really selling

A store called "Official Store" is not proof that a brand runs it. The strongest sign is a link from the brand's own website, and for the brands below we found none on AliExpress:

  • KUPA: no marketplace store link on the KUPA pages we read.
  • MelodySusie: no AliExpress link or mention on its contact, returns or FAQ pages. Its contact page lists Amazon, TikTok Shop, Shein and Walmart as order channels.[11]
  • Makartt: its Amazon Sale page links its Amazon brand stores; a single AliExpress product link on that page does not establish an official store.[12]
  • SUNUV: sunuvstore.com is not SUNUV's site. Its own terms describe a product-information site that earns Amazon and AliExpress commissions, and its AliExpress button leads to a search, not a store.[13]

The seller also decides your warranty. Medicool's warranty excludes products bought from unauthorized resellers.[14] If the brand you want names other channels, buying there keeps the maker's warranty in play. The seller verification guide covers the checks for any marketplace.

6. Returns

AliExpress's Free Return terms apply only to items that carry the Free Return label. You request the return within 15 calendar days of confirmed receipt, and it is opened as a dispute.[1] The terms document is dated 2022, so check the label and the current terms on the listing itself. If the wrong plug or voltage arrives, open the return rather than using an adapter.

7. Costs at checkout

Read the shipping, import duty and fee lines at checkout before you pay. Whether duties and fees are collected at checkout or on delivery depends on the listing and the carrier, so a low item price can still leave charges to pay on arrival.

Questions

Is there an official KUPA, MelodySusie, Makartt or Kiara Sky store on AliExpress?

We could not establish one. None of these brands' own pages that we read links to an official AliExpress store, so we treat any AliExpress store using their names as unconfirmed.

Is sunuvstore.com SUNUV's official site?

Not according to its own terms, which describe a product-information site that earns Amazon and AliExpress affiliate commissions. SUNUV sells direct from its own store at sunuv.com.[13][15]

Is a 2.35 mm nail drill bit the same as 3/32 inch?

Not on paper: 3/32 inch is exactly 2.38125 mm. We found no maker statement that the two labels are interchangeable, so buy the shank size your handpiece maker states.[9]

What does a 'conversion plug' in a listing mean?

It may mean a plug adapter rather than a native plug. MelodySusie, for example, says it ships the power supply for the buyer's region with either a national standard plug or a conversion plug. Ask the seller which you will get.[3]

How long do I have to return an AliExpress item?

For items with the Free Return label, AliExpress's terms let you request a return within 15 calendar days of confirmed receipt, opened as a dispute. For other items, read the return terms on the listing before you order.[1]
