120 V nail equipment: voltage, plugs and chargers
How to read the input line on a nail drill, lamp or dust collector, why a plug adapter is not a voltage converter, and what makers say about chargers.

Short answer
In the US and Canada, buy nail equipment whose maker states an input that covers 120 V at 60 Hz, sold with a native North American plug. "100-240 V, 50/60 Hz" covers it; "220 V" or "50 Hz" alone does not. A plug adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage. And use the charger or adapter the maker supplies: Medicool's warranty, for one, excludes damage from incorrect voltage or power adapters.[1]
Reading the input line
| What the maker states | Example | What it means for a 120 V, 60 Hz outlet |
|---|---|---|
| 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz | MelodySusie EOS 3 lamp[2]; Kiara Sky corded flash-cure lamp's adapter[3]; SHEMAX PetitePro X, per its US distributor[4] | Covered, if the plug is right |
| 110-220 V, no frequency given | Medicool Pro Power 35K corded controller[5] | 120 V is inside the range; check the plug |
| "Automatic switching 110/220 volts" | KUPA, for its Passport system[6] | Maker says it switches itself; check the plug |
| 110-220 V / 50 Hz | ULKA Premium collector[7] | Voltage is in range, but 50 Hz only is stated and US mains is 60 Hz[8]; ask ULKA before using it here |
| "220/50 and 110V" | ULKA Handy collector[9] | Does not say whether one unit takes both; ask which version you are getting |
| "Available in 120 V (US)" | Kiara Sky Lamp III[10] | Choose the US version |
Plug adapters are not voltage converters
A plug adapter only changes the shape of the pins. It does not change 120 V into 220 V or the other way round. That matters in two cases:
- Region-specific lamps. SUNUV offers only US, UK and EU plugs and tells US-lamp owners traveling to the UK or EU that they need a voltage converter.[11] That suggests the US version is not dual-voltage, but SUNUV does not publish its adapters' input ratings; ask SUNUV support if you plan to travel.
- "Conversion plugs." MelodySusie says its products ship with the power supply for the buyer's region, with either a national standard plug or a conversion plug.[12] A conversion plug may mean you receive a plug adapter rather than a native plug, so check the exact listing.
Chargers and replacement adapters
- Use the maker's adapter. Medicool advises using only Medicool-approved power adapters,[1] and its warranty excludes damage from incorrect voltage or power adapters.[1]
- Replacement cords may not exist. SUNUV does not sell replacement power cords, says it has not identified a compatible third-party cord, and says non-SUNUV cords may affect performance and void the warranty.[13]
- If you must replace a charger, Health Canada says its output voltage must match the device's input and its current must be compatible; incompatible adapters can overheat or damage devices.[14] For lithium-ion devices, Health Canada recommends the original charger and says replacements should carry a Canadian mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL.[15]
Look at the adapter's own label: its input line tells you which outlets it accepts, and its output line (for example the EOS 3's DC 30 V 1.2 A[2]) tells you what a replacement must match.
Buying from overseas sellers
Some listings sell the same model in several voltage or plug versions. Before you order:
- Pick the US or 110-120 V version by name, not just a "US plug" option.
- Read the input line on the product photo or manual, not just the title.
- Ask the seller what plug comes in the box if the listing mentions an adapter or "conversion plug".
- Check for a safety mark you can verify; see UL, ETL, CSA, CE and FCC marks.

Questions
Can I use a 220 V nail drill in the US with a plug adapter?
No. A plug adapter changes the pin shape, not the voltage. Choose a model whose stated input covers 120 V, such as a 100-240 V or 110-220 V input, with a North American plug.
Will a 50 Hz dust collector work on US power?
Ask the maker first. ULKA states 110-220 V at 50 Hz only for its Premium collector, while US mains is 60 Hz.[7][8]
Can I use a different charger with my nail drill?
Use the maker's adapter where possible: Medicool's warranty excludes damage from incorrect power adapters. Health Canada says any replacement's output voltage must match the device's input and its current must be compatible.[1][14]
Can I take my US nail lamp to Europe?
SUNUV tells US-lamp owners traveling to the UK or EU that they need a voltage converter. For other brands, check the adapter's input line.[11]
What does 'conversion plug' mean on a nail equipment listing?
MelodySusie says its products ship with either a national standard plug or a conversion plug for the buyer's region, so you may receive a plug adapter rather than a native plug.[12]
