E-file controllers: voltage, speed, direction and handpiece fit

What an e-file control box does, the input voltages and controls makers list, which handpieces it accepts, and the adapter and warranty catches.

Also listed as control box, nail drill control unit

Short answer

The controller (control box) powers the handpiece and sets its speed and direction. KUPA lists forward/reverse, variable speed, a pause button and a digital RPM display on its Passport NEXT box, and "automatic switching 110/220 volts" for the Passport system. Neither KUPA nor Medicool names a UL, ETL or CSA mark on the pages we read.

Key facts

What it does
Powers the handpiece and sets speed and direction[1]KUPA's Passport NEXT box lists forward/reverse, variable speed, a pause button and a digital RPM display.
Power source
Mains (Medicool corded Pro Power 35K) or rechargeable (KUPA Passport NEXT portable box)[2][1]Medicool's corded model also comes with an on/off foot pedal.
Input voltage
"Automatic switching 110/220 volts" (KUPA Passport system); 110-220 V (Medicool Pro Power 35K controller)[3][2]Maker statements.
Speed (claimed)
30,000 RPM (KUPA Passport NEXT); up to 35,000 RPM (Medicool Pro Power 35K)[1][2]Maker figures for the paired handpiece.
Safety marks
None named on KUPA's or Medicool's pages[3][1][2]Neither maker names a UL, ETL or CSA mark on the pages we read.
Warranty
One year (Medicool Pro Power 35K); one year per KUPA's Passport NEXT product page[2][1][4]KUPA's own news post gives a different term; ask KUPA before relying on more than one year.
What no source measures
Whether a box holds its set speed under load[1]Digital RPM displays show the controller's setting or reading; we found no independent check of their accuracy.

Watch out for

  • Range-wide FAQ answers are not model specs. MelodySusie's FAQ says its drills have forward/reverse rotation and a speed knob on the control unit, but that is a general answer for the range. Confirm the controls on the exact model, as pen-style drills may differ.
  • Use the maker's adapter. Medicool advises using only Medicool-approved power adapters, and its warranty excludes damage from incorrect voltage or adapters.
  • A controller fits listed handpieces. KUPA names the handpieces compatible with its Passport NEXT box; check the list before mixing brands.
  • Voltage wording is the maker's. "Automatic switching 110/220 volts" is KUPA's statement, not a safety listing.

Corded and cordless boxes do the same job. The difference is where the power comes from: compare a corded e-file with a cordless e-file.

For voltage, plugs and adapters, read 120 V nail equipment.

Questions

Why does a nail drill controller have forward and reverse?

Reverse lets the bit cut in the other direction, which left-handed techs and some techniques use. KUPA lists forward/reverse on the Passport NEXT, and Medicool markets its 5-in-1 carbide bit as cutting in both directions for right- and left-handed techs. See forward and reverse.[1][5]

Will a 110/220 V controller work in the US?

KUPA lists "automatic switching 110/220 volts" for its Passport system and Medicool lists a 110-220 V controller for its corded 35K. Those are the makers' statements. Check the label on the unit and the plug type on the exact listing, and use the maker's own adapter.[3][2][6]
