Do all nail drill bits fit all drills?
Most nail drills take 3/32-inch bits, but makers say most, not all. The 3/32 rule, four exceptions to check, and how bit holders follow the same size.

Short answer
Most, not all. Most nail drills and bits use a 3/32-inch shank: MelodySusie calls it the industry standard, and Medicool says its bits fit all Medicool drills and most professional nail drills.[1][2] But "most" is the makers' own word, and there are real exceptions: Medicool says its 5-in-1 carbide bits do not work in three of its own vacuum machines.[3] Check the drill maker's stated shank size and any listed exceptions before you buy.
The 3/32 rule
Three makers state the same size:
- MelodySusie says all its nail drill bits are 3/32 inch, which it calls the industry-standard size.[1]
- Medicool says all its Pro Bits use a standard 3/32-inch shank and fit all Medicool drills and most professional nail drills.[2]
- KUPA says its diamond small barrel bit can be used with any 3/32-inch e-file handpiece,[4] and its comprehensive bit kit lists only 3/32-inch parts, including diamond and carbide bits, a safety bit and a mandrel with sanding bands.[5]
So a 3/32-inch bit from one of these makers should suit a handpiece that its maker says takes 3/32-inch bits. That is the rule. The exceptions follow.
Exception 1: the label is not 3/32
A bit labeled 2.35 mm is not the same number as 3/32 inch (2.38 mm), and no maker we read says the two are interchangeable. See 3/32 vs 2.35 mm bits.
Exception 2: the machine is not a standard e-file
Some machines have their own limits even with 3/32-inch bits. Medicool says its 5-in-1 carbide bits do not work with the Medicool File Stream, Vac File or Pro Vac File Classic vacuum machines.[3] If your drill is a vacuum file, a pen-style tool or a combined unit, read the maker's bit list rather than relying on the shank size alone.
Exception 3: "most" means most
Medicool's own wording is "most professional nail drills", not all.[2] A shared shank size is a good sign, not a promise from the drill maker. If the drill maker publishes a list of approved bits, follow it.
Exception 4: direction
Fit is not only about the shank. A standard carbide bit cuts in one direction. If you work in reverse, you need a two-way or left-hand bit. See forward and reverse on a nail drill.
Holders and stands use the same size
Bit holders are drilled for a shank size too. MelodySusie says its 10-hole drill holder takes 3/32-inch bits, tilts from 13 to 50 degrees and is listed for MelodySusie models including the SC320H, MM400C and MB450C.[6] Its "compatible with most nail drills" wording is the maker's claim, so check your handpiece against its list. A holder keeps bits organized; it does not clean them.
A quick fit check
- Find the shank size your handpiece maker states.
- Buy bits labeled with that exact size.
- Check the drill maker's notes for machines or bits that are excluded.
- Insert the bit fully and lock the chuck. It should seat without force and spin without wobble at low speed.

Questions
Are nail drill bits universal?
No. Most use a 3/32-inch shank, but Medicool says its bits fit most professional nail drills, not all, and its 5-in-1 carbide bits do not work in three of its own vacuum machines.[2][3]
Will Medicool bits fit a KUPA drill?
Medicool says its Pro Bits use a standard 3/32-inch shank and fit most professional nail drills, and KUPA's handpieces take standard 3/32-inch bits. Neither maker names the other, so check that the bit seats and locks properly.[2][7]
Do MelodySusie bits fit other brands' drills?
MelodySusie says all its bits are 3/32 inch, the size most makers state. It does not list other brands' drills, so follow your drill maker's stated shank size.[1]
What size holes does a nail bit holder need?
The same shank size as your bits. MelodySusie's 10-hole holder, for example, takes 3/32-inch bits.[6]
